Punta Cana was discovered in 1969 by a group of Northamerican citizens while flying their aircraft over the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic in search of a place to set up a Marine and Merchant school. It was at that moment, they discovered the marvelous streach of virgin beaches with white sand and calm waters of emerald color protected by natural barrier of coral reefs in all of the extended beach zone; that is known today as Punta Cana and Macao. These investors bought almost a hundred thousand hectare of this marvelous land, not knowing at the moment what they had in plan for it. Even though they knew it was a great investment, asking Frank Rainieri (today President of Punta Cana Group)to be their consultant in this zone. Later on the first small group of tourist bungalows were built with a small landing strip, this is where the first tourist landed, in an area called “Yauya” ( Indian name of this zone).
That is when Rainieri started to form a partnership in this undertaking; even with the political difficulties of the Country they decided to offer Club Mediterraneé the construction of a greater importance; that was how and when a 350 rooms hotel was built, that today is knows as Club Med. A short time after the construction of the International Airport of Punta Cana was started, inaugurated in 1984, this contributed the continuous growth of this area. Today this zone is visited by more than two millions tourist a year. In 1990 the the UNESCO (Organization of the United Nations of Educations) declared Bavaro and its beaches “Patrimony of the Humanity”.

The population established in this zone is varied and scarce, even though in the last several years the demographics growth is continuous. Not only are there a large group a Dominicans migrating to the Punta Cana and Bavaro zone seeking employment but also a large amount of people of different nationalities are adding on to the population. Foreigners have been drawn by the offers to work in this growing industry of turism. This industry and its rapid growth has increased the amount of foreigners and local investors to move into this attractive area on a permanent basis.
The official language of the Dominican Republic is Spanish. Even though tourism has opened the doors to learning new languages. The English is the second most used in this zone. Other languages of frequent use are German, French, Italian and Russian.
Dominican Republic is part of the Island “La Hispaniola” and shares its domain with the Republic of Haiti, found to the west of the island. Dominican Republic has a surface of 48.730 squares kilometers; three quartes part of the total Island. La Hispaniola is part of the larger Antilles along with Cuba, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. The official postal services are very slow, so if you need to send something of importance and quickly, we recommended to do it by private mail, like UPS, FEDEX and DHL. If you need to recive or send money you can use the following campanies WESTERN UNION, HEMISFERIO, etc.
In general the zone is secure but just like in any place you visit it is wise to show of items of high value, not to circulate in dark or desserted areas; flash or carry all of your money to avoid any problem. We advise you to put all your personal documentations, valuables and money in the safe provided by your hotel. The electricity that is generally used in the Punta Cana and Bavaro area, is 110 volts. In some hotels the voltage is 220 so please ask at reception of your hotel before using any of your electrical items.
The consumption and possession of drus is illegal through out the Island and is severely punishable.
This zone is characterized for its good climate, the level of sickness is low, but like in any other countries you may visit; keep in mind it is important to take precautions, there are factors that exist that may cause occasional problems. We recommend you purchase additional medical insurance and inform yourselves on what to do in case of an emergency. In case you are on medication please be sure you bring enough to carry you through your stay. In your hotel there are medical centers with doctors on call 24 hours a day. In the event that you may need to be seen by an specialist you can visit them in the local clinic and Hospital in the area.
Many couples decide to get married in Punta Cana and Bavaro. The majority of the hotels offer this service. In the Dominican Republic there is a law that states; foreign couples can obtain legal divorce with-in 24 hours. In order to carry out this procedure a record of separation is needed and both parties need to be in agreement.
We recommended the use of bottled water and food you consume be done at Hotels and known restaurants.
In these latitudes the sun is very strong. We recommended the use of sun block with higher degree of sunscreen to avoid serious sun burns also the use of hats. The best time for safe sun bathing is from 9-11 am and after 4 pm.
This zone is surrounded by coral reef making it attractive to divers but a word of advise: the corals are very sharp and cut could get infected. It is strictly prohibited to take possession of the coral specimens and you could be fined for the destruction of the ecosystem if caught
It is recommended to used some type of insect repellent to avoid insect bites. Extra caution should be taken during rainy season. This season is between the months of June until november and it is when the reproduction of mosquitos transmitter of some sickness increase. In case of insect bites the use of antiseptic medication is recommended.
Fresh and comfortable clothes are the best. Sports clothes and bathing suits, sneackers etc. are the most practical. In hotel, restaurants, casinos and nighty shows it is suggested the use of casual sports clothing (long pants for men). In winter month (December thru March) we suggest to bring a light jacket or sweater.
The official religion is catholicism, even though other religions are practiced on the Island.
Taxes and tips are included in your hotel rates. If you consider that the services received has been good and you wish to reward that, please do so, it will be greattly appreciated.
The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso RD$, but in this zone the U.S. Dollar and Euro is accepted. Credit cards, Traveler´s checks and debit cards are accepted in almost all areas in the turist zone. Please ask before making any purchases. It is highly recommended to have the number of your bank or credit card hot line in a safe place in case of loss, theft or retention of card by ATM machine (cash point). If you wish to exchange your money please ask your hotel receptionist. They are always willing to help out. This service is available 24 hours in most hotels. You can also find money exchange houses through out the Punta Cana and Bavaro area, warning do not exchange your money with just anyone no matter how good the offer sounds, please avoid being ripped off. Another option to withdraw money is by ATM machine (cash point) found in most hotel and local areas; but be aware when using these it will only dispense Dominican currency (pesos). So change a little at a time. Not everyones departures tax has been included so if this is your case the departure tax of 20 dollars must be paid in U.S. Currency.
